Caring for the Fatherland Through Socialization of the Utilization of Paper Waste in SMPN 16 Surabaya Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Activities such as student assignments, material duplication, and administrative tasks. However, the extensive use of paper is not supported by an effective waste management system, resulting in large amounts of waste paper being discarded without reuse. This issue not only increases waste accumulation in schools but also poses broader environmental challenges. To address this, a service learning (SL) approach was employed, integrating student learning with community service. Through SL, students not only apply theoretical knowledge but also develop social skills, empathy, and a sense of responsibility. This project involved students in environmental awareness and creative paper waste management activities, particularly focusing on the Adiwiyata team at SMPN 16 Surabaya. The project followed several stages: problem identification and planning, classroom preparation, service implementation, reflection, demonstration and evaluation, and sustainable development. Twenty-five students from SMPN 16 Surabaya participated, supported by the Surabaya City Environmental Agency and guided by PPG students from the State University of Surabaya. The outcome was a creative product made from paper waste: a 3-dimensional map of Indonesian islands. The activity was successful, marked by enthusiastic student participation and the creation of innovative products.
